Steady versus flashing

A steady check-engine light usually means the vehicle has stored a fault that should be diagnosed soon. If the car drives normally, schedule a visit and avoid ignoring it for weeks.

A flashing light can indicate a severe misfire that may damage the catalytic converter. If the car is shaking, losing power, overheating, smoking, or smells strongly of fuel, pull over safely and call for guidance.

Do not guess from the code

A scan code describes a system or condition. It does not always identify the failed part. Testing the related wiring, sensors, air, fuel, and ignition systems is how a technician finds the real cause.

Write down the symptoms

Note when the light appeared, whether the vehicle starts hard, and whether the problem changes with speed, temperature, or rain. That information can save time during diagnosis.
